Jim Matthews is a senior marine client advisor based out of Atlanta, GA. Jim’s portfolio consists of global clients with a primary focus on clients based on the US East Coast. In this role, he is intimately engaged on risk management placements for large hull and liabilities clients. He is responsible for developing renewal strategies, executing placement, negotiating with insurance markets, providing coverage interpretations and advice, and introducing new risk solutions. Jim works on a wide range of clients including cruise ships, blue-water shippers, government contractors, shipyards, vessel charterers, tug/barge operators, and marine construction. In addition to hull and marine liabilities, Jim has several years of expertise brokering and underwriting cargo insurance primarily focused on wood products, project cargo, and miscellaneous commodities. Jim also serves as Marsh’s Marine, Cargo, and Logistics Practice’s co-Lead of their Industrial Vessels committee, focusing on brown-water business across the United States.

Jim joined Marsh in August of 2022 and has spent fourteen years in the marine insurance industry. Jim spent six years as a marine insurance underwriter with Great American Insurance and The Hartford before becoming a marine broker for six years with Durham and Bates, a Portland-based specialty brokerage. Jim has also served over nineteen years in the US Army Reserves, with three deployments to Afghanistan and Djibouti.
